“He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good.” –Isaiah 7:15

In early summer, when the sunlight filters through newly greened leaves and the air is heavy with scent, worker bees buzz through field and forest collecting pollen for their winter stores. The very luckiest will land on the small white cup-shaped flower of the sourwood tree (Oxydendrum arboretum). The honey made from sourwood pollen is prized around the world; but this honey, like all honeys, is the product of a unique area. Of all that honey is, it is most distinctly local.

Much like local honey, our lives are also boundaried. In God’s kind providence, He has set each of us in a specific time and place to serve Him there. Humility teaches us to embrace these physical limits as good gifts from Him, to conduct ourselves with purity and to be busy serving others. No, to be local is not a limitation, especially when it results in the sweetness of sourwood honey.
